Two things give this wine a distinctive and unique character compared with other White Bordeaux. First, the wine is an even blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The richness of the Semillon is balanced by the vibrant acidity of the Sauvignon Blanc. Then, 80% of the wine is aged in barrels previously used to make Guiraud's primary wine - a sweet Sauternes. And not just any Sauternes, but one of the best examples out there! Anyhoo, these used barrels don't add any sweetness to the wine, but rather add an intriguing hint of botrytis that presents itself in a barely there hint of guave, mango and spice. A perfect match with shellfish risotto. Click on the pic for a recipe.
“This is a dense, waxy white with sliced dried-apple and lemon character, as well as stone and white peaches. It’s full-bodied, flavorful and rich. I like the spicy finish at the end from the semillon. Really excellent." JS
“Guiraud is synonymous with Sauternes, but this dry white shows the same class and complexity as you find in its famous sweet wines. It's an equal blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, packed with spiky gooseberries and nettles, rich tropical tones and creamy herbal and hay notes. Long and textural with lifted grapefruit acidity." Decanter on the 92 pt 2018
