The Boca region is located in Piedmont, Italy, nestled in the foothills of Monte Rosa, the 2nd highest peak in Europe. One of the northernmost, and smallest appellations (only 34 acres), Boca had all but disappeared from the wine map until Le Piane proprietor Christoph Künzli arrived in the late 90s. But after a Tre Bicchieri rating in Gambero Rosso, those “in the know” started to rediscover the region. The northern location, winds from the Alps, glacial lakes and highly acidic, iron-rich soil all combine to produce Nebbiolo-based wines that are high in acid, earthy and long-lived. Even better, they rival the greatest you will find from Barolo and Barbaresco. All at a fraction of the price. The Vallana family has been stewards of the region since arriving in 1787!
65% Nebbiolo, 20% Vespolina, 15% Uva Rara "Vallana is one of the reference-points for Alto Piemonte. The wines are made in a classic, unadorned style that emphasizes varietal and site character. Best of all, the Vallana wines offer unreal value. The 2016 Boca is a total stunner. Deep and fleshy in the glass, the 2016 is full of character. Ideally readers will be able to cellar it for a few years, as it is very young. Sweet tobacco, licorice, black cherry, plum and earthy notes develop with a bit of time in the glass. The 2016 is fabulous. There is just not much else to say. Well, except that it is also a remarkable value in ageworthy wine." VM
