Have you ever wondered, “What if one of the world’s greatest winemakers decided to ‘have fun’ and make a rose?”
Well, wonder no more, because Raul Perez, hailed many times over as Winemaker of the Year in publications around the globe, has done just that. For this wine, Raul ventures outside of his Bierzo homeland to the region of Leon, further inland to the East. Raul has chosen Prieto Pecudo as his muse for this lovely project.
Prieto Pecudo is a rare, dark-skinned grape native to the region. For reds, it produces deep, wildly aromatic wines with firm tannins and good acidity. For rose, the styles can vary, but here Raul chooses to accentuate Prieto Picudo’s inherent strengths. The result is a darker rosado, more akin to Tavel than Provence. Wild, explosive aromas of violets, cherries and strawberries jump from the glass, backed up by slightly grippy tannins and spice.
Like Tavel, this baby can stand up to some hefty foods – pork or chicken, rubbed with fresh herbs and grilled would be delicious. But, let’s branch out this weekend and put together a classic dish – Fideuá – kind of like Paella with noodles instead of rice. Click on the pic for a recipe.
