Yep. Jackson Estate. As in Kendall-Jackson. Oh, stop. Since when did achieving success become a bad thing in the U.S.? Jess Jackson was a self-made man, putting himself through law school while working as a dock laborer, a policeman and an ambulance driver! And despite the size of his holdings, the vineyards are all family-owned and sustainably farmed.
Call me a sentimental fool, but this is just the type of story I want to promote!
Then again, I really don’t care about the story… I care about the wine! And this is awesome wine!
Oh… and at the country’s best price!
The Jackson Estate series is a project to highlight some of the Jackson family’s more unique holdings in some of the coolest climates in California – Anderson Valley, Alexander Valley and Santa Maria Valley. The small production allows the winemakers to focus on the terroir of these properties, showcasing what is perhaps Jess Jackson’s most enduring legacy – a collection of off the beaten path vineyards, all throughout California, all sustainably farmed!
Grapes for this gem come from three vineyards in Anderson Valley, one of California’s northernmost regions. The sister vineyards of Outland Ridge and Boone Ridge sit side by side at 1,500 feet elevation, above the fog line, in the “warmer” part of the cool valley. Coupled with the nutrient-poor soils, the resulting grapes provide power to the wine, as well as savory Pinot character. The balance of the wine comes from the Falk Vineyard, just outside Navarro, close to sea level, and just 9 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The cooling breezes and maritime fog result in bright acidity, elegance and juicy “red” fruit flavors to balance the other vineyards.
Sweet red cherry and raspberry aromas start this baby off, giving way to a darker core of black cherry, plum, and cola. Vibrant acidity and firm minerality keeps everything in balance through the long, silky finish. This is the rare Pinot that offers the best of both “sides” of the grape – the wonderful fruitiness that makes it a crowd-pleaser, yet the earthy, mineral nuances that give the wine staying power and food–pairing prowess!
"aged nine months in 32% new French oak, opens with blueberries, Cran-Apple, forest floor, Bing cherries and cranberries with a spicy core. It's light to medium-bodied, silky and intense with grainy tannins and juicy freshness on the long, spicy finish." WA
"one of the more generous, sensual wines in this range from Kendall Jackson. Sweet red berry, mint, blood orange and rose petal are all finely sketched. Succulent and racy, with lovely resonance, the 2017 is enticing from the first taste." Vinous
