“These may very well be the finest set of wines I have ever tasted from Luca Sanjust at Petrolo. From top to bottom, the range is so impressive.” – Antonio Galloni
Luca Sanjust’s Petrolo estate is one of the finest in Tuscany, but unfortunately we don’t see a lot of their wines in NC. Petrolo’s top wine, Galatrona, sells for a $100 a bottle, its superb, I highly recommend it if you can ever find it. But the gem in their portfolio is this Torrione, a Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot blend that drinks and scores like the big boys of Tuscany but costs about a third of the price. Just 10 cases for NC, don’t miss it!

“Petrolo is the definition of a cult winery, with an owner and a story that have helped create its legendary status. While the estate’s benchmark wine, the Merlot cru Galatrona, deservedly receives fireworks in the press and is part of the history of Tuscany’s quality revolution in the late 1980s and 1990s, the winery’s two other standouts, Torrione and Boggina, are an equally thrilling success – Sangiovese from a special and virtually unknown appellation bordering Chianti Classico that today produces wines of distinct regional identity.” – Importer note
"A red with plenty of blackberry, black-olive, floral and oyster-shell character. It’s full-bodied, yet layered, extremely polished and beautiful. A dusty texture. Hazelnut and walnut undertones. From organically grown grapes. A little more merlot and cabernet sauvignon in the blend. Gorgeous now, but better after 2021 and onwards.” – JS
“This is such a fun edition of this wine with a fluttering heart sketched onto the front label. I imagine that the heart could be dedicated to proprietor Luca Sanjust's rambunctious mother who recently passed away. Made with organic fruit, the Petrolo 2018 Val d'Arno di Sopra Torrione is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The wine opens to a dark and rich appearance with punchy aromas of tart cherry and wild berry. Warm aromas of tobacco, spice and cedar wood appear gradually as the wine opens in the glass.” – WA
“Petrolo's 2018 Torrione is fabulous. Deep, inky and generous, the 2018 packs a serious punch. Ripe dark red fruit, chocolate, spice, leather and tobacco are all kicked up a few notches, with sweet floral top notes that add aromatic lift. The 2018 is an especially boisterous Torrione, with all the elements in the right place. In a word: delicious.” – VM
