[Sam] I love weird, geeky white wine, but sometimes you gotta go with the classics. Yeah- offbeat Chilean Sauv Blanc or funky touraines are super fun to nerd out on, but when I finished my first lawn-mow of the season last weekend, I was thrilled to have this chilled down in the fridge! Not going to lie- I was not exactly turning my most critical eye to that first glass. Sometimes you just want crisp and delicious, and the Giesen is IT!
This family-owned winery has been proudly producing since the 1984, when brother Marcel, Theo, and Alex left their native Germany to start a new venture in New Zealand. That German heritage shows through in their winemaking- using large German-style foeders as well as planting German varietals throughout their vineyards! Don’t get it wrong, though- this bad boy is pure Kiwi, sourced from vineyards in the acclaimed Awatare and Wairau valleys in Marlborough. This is everything I’m looking for in everyday Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc. There’s wonderful tropical fruit with heaps of citrus, and a sharp, steely finish. It’s beautifully precise and linear, and just what I’m after for a crisp everyday white.
As far as pairings go, the winery recommends fresh seafood- steamed mussels would be absolutely perfect. Click the picture for my go-to curried mussel recipe!
