Located about an hour southeast of Vienna, Weingut Schrock is a traditionally-run family operation located on the eastern bank of Lake Neusiedl. Ahh… isn’t that beautiful?
Anyhoo... Heidi was awarded Falstaff Magazine's "Vintner of the Year", making her one of only a few women to be so awarded. She makes a wide range of wines from traditionally historic grapes like Grauburgunder, Weissburgunder, and Welschriesling, but it is her sweet wines which she is most famous for.
"Ripe melon flesh and quince peel notes on the nose promise savory fruit. The palate bursts in with luscious, intense fruit that spills over with grapefruit zest and gorgeously bitter notions of citrus pith and quince peel while a lightning streak of freshness freezes everything into precision. There is much going on here, riotously so, and despite all the sweetness it is this rapier freshness that makes this moreish. Drink by 2050." WE
Normally, I lean towards dessert when thinking of a food match... so I am just going to have to trust Heidi on her suggestions... "Combining the earthy element in beetroot and spelt rice in a risotto, or a grilled steak with pepper sauce, fennel bulbs with oranges from Sicily and all kinds of pasties with cranberries."
Okay... sweet wine with steak... I simply must try it!
