I'm going to let Rich's texts to me about this wine explain his enthusiasm... and yes, we really do text each when we are drinking something good.
Apparently "yonks" is a British expression for a really long time. I finally had to tell him to stop texting me, and just go get a deal on it already! This wine is that good...

I’ve been a huge fan of Selvapiana’s wines ever since I visited their historic Rufina estate years ago. Their Chianti’s have become huge store favorites, with staff and customers alike gravitating towards their graceful age worthy style. But what’s this? They make a wine from Pomino! This tiny region sits in the far northwestern corner of Chianti, bordering and overlapping part of Rufina. Pomino is mostly pine forest with just 180 acres of vines planted at elevations of up to 2300 ft, the highest in all of Tuscany! Pomino’s wines are hard to define, mostly because Frescobaldi’s Castello Pomino dominates the region producing everything from chardonnay, pinot nero, sparkling, and Vin Santo from their vineyards. Selvapiana’s Villa Petrognano is a different take.
A blend of 60% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Merlot from a certified organic vineyard on the Villa Petrognano estate. The cool higher elevation vines here have a longer hangtime than the rest of Tuscany, building more complexity, heightened aromatics and greater acidity as the fruit ripens. The grapes were harvested separately then fermented using indigenous yeast, and aged for 29 months in a combination of large French oak casks and smaller barriques. Once you put your nose to the glass you instantly know this wine is special. Wild cherry, cassis, violets, smoky spices, sandalwood, graphite… Is this Tuscany or is this Bordeaux? Take a sip, wow! Blackcurrant and more cherry, medium-weight and so elegant and pure on the tongue. There’s sneaky structure, well-woven fine-grained tannins and so much freshness leading into an almost minute long finish. I had it open for three days and it just got better and better. Load up by the case, you can expect this wine to age for another decade or more easily. I love Tuscan wines and great Bordeaux, this stunner gives me the best of both worlds at an incredible price.
"The sweet, smoky aroma of burning vine cuttings introduces this enticing red. Black cherry and black currant flavors are framed by cedar, pencil shavings, tar and tobacco. It firms up in the end, with beefy tannins and a lingering savory finish. Sangiovese. Best from 2022 through 2035. 600 cases made, 250 cases imported." - WS
"Fragrant and refined, this opens with enticing scents of rose, violet, sandalwood and forest floor. All about finesse, the elegantly structured palate delivers ripe Marasca cherry, strawberry compote, star anise and ground cinnamon set against firm, fine-grained tannins. It's well balanced, with fresh acidity." – WE
