Krug 159th “Tribute to Time” NV (750 ml) - Sale $255 - 97 pts James Suckling (2 available)
They are calling this "Tribute to Time" as it is a late release of the Grande Cuvee structured around the infamous 2003 vintage. In doing so, they are showcasing the winery's ability to craft a singularly great wine, year after year, that is both a continuation of the Cuvee, as well as a reflection of the base vintage.
"Krug Grande Cuvée 159ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2003. A year of such extremes was unheard of in living memory: a spring with severe frosts then a summer of record-breaking heat. The harvest began on 23rd August - the earliest since 1822 - and continued in waves until early October, ensuring each plot was harvested at the optimal moment. When the time came to taste the wines of the year, the House's respect for the individual character of every plot revealed the different ways in which the year's dramatic conditions had impacted each of them. To complement the solar qualities of the wines of the year, the House turned to its extensive library of reserve wines, which made up 37% of the final blend. The addition of 1996 wines from Trépail and Avize lent vibrancy and freshness while a 1994 Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger gave structure. Chardonnays from more recent years brought the vitality so essential to every Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée." winery note
"A beautiful array of complex toastiness, fresh and roasted mushrooms, lemon, tangerine and peach, with honeysuckle and some spicy elements, too. The complexity and comfortingly rich, warming aromatic depth is in full song. The palate has vivacious, rich orange grapefruit, peach and lemon rind, with some exotic moments, and spicy flashes, too. There's a distinctive, plush and alluringly long, grapefruit and hazelnut finish." JS
Krug Grande Cuvee 168th edition NV Magnum - Sale $420 (4 available)
97 pts James Suckling / 96 pts Decanter / 96 pts Wine Advocate / 96 pts Wine Enthusiast / 95 pts Wine Spectator
“Krug's NV Grande Cuvée 168ème Édition is a classic in the making, wafting from the glass with aromas of dried fruits, pear, toasted nuts, orange zest, honeycomb and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, generous but incisive, it's deep and elegantly fleshy, with a beautifully refined mousse and an enveloping core of fruit that's complemented by the characteristic Krug patina of nutty complexity imparted by barrel fermentation. Even if this is more open out of the gates than the 2011-based 167ème edition, the 168ème edition is also the more concentrated and intense of the two. It's based on the 2012 harvest, complemented by fully 42% reserve wines—a blend of 198 wines from 11 different vintages dating back to 1996.” – WA
Krug Grande Cuvee 166th edition NV Magnum - Sale $440 (4 available)
97 pts Decanter / 96 pts Wine Advocate / 95 pts Wine Enthusiast / 95 pts Wine Spectator / 94 pts Vinous
“45% Pinot Noir, 39% Chardonnay, 16% Meunier, blended from 140 wines dating from 1996 to 2010, including 42% reserves. Krug leads off where most other Champagne houses end, and its entry wine is every bit a prestige cuvée. It smells and tastes like no other wine, a monumental paradox of tense freshness, profound maturity and inimitable complexity. Decadently rich, extravagantly complex and thunderingly expansive, Grande Cuvée is a vinous Champagne of multifaceted personality, yet ever-heightened tension. For all it represents, spanning 25 years of production, it presents incredible value. Drinking Window 2020 – 2030.” – Decanter
Krug 2003 Magnum - Sale $569 (6 available)
95 pts Vinous / 95 pts Wine Spectator / 95 James Suckling / 95 pts Decanter
“Tasted this year with Chef de Cave, Eric Lebel, it is exactly the same edition (ID) as tasted in 2016. This shows a rich nose featuring deep and ripe chardonnay and pinot noir. Red fruits, some dark mushrooms, plenty of grilled nuts, caramel, some deep spices, dried citrus, lemon peel and bready aromas are all there. The trademark complexity is here, too, and this freshens with air. The palate is intricately detailed and stitched together like needlework. It is extremely precise and even, and the acidity is articulated with some finesse, even if this has much more in terms of phenolics as the leading structural component. The phenolics are rich and ripe, and they sit polished and even around immensely concentrated fruits such as peaches, nectarines and white cherries. The finish is deep, even and resonant. Drink now but rest assured that this will hold for a very long time – just as Krug has proven in other warm years such as '76." JS
