“Southern Italian wineries to seek out” – Decanter
And seek out I did after slurping down a bottle of this gorgeous Tavel-like rosato from the heart of Italy. 100% Montepulciano d’Abruzzo from 57 year-old vines planted in limestone soil (“White Gold”), hand-harvested from a block of vines that are cooler than the rest of the vineyard. Yeah… that is some serious attention to detail. Winemaker Cristiana Tiberio is obsessed with minerality and structure. So for her rosato, she figured out which part of the vineyard was coolest, in order to capture higher acidity and expressive aromas that are essential to world-class rose. The juice is free-run only – meaning the grapes are not pressed to extract juice. This is another key step – pressed juice has more of the tannic notes from the skins, as well as other less desirable notes from the stems and seeds.
Put it all together and you have an incredible rose, worthy of standing toe-to-toe with the world’s best.
Except the price.
For this level of quality, you can easily pay $40 or more for a top offering from Tavel, Provence, Bandol, etc. Buy 2 or three of these instead! Trust me. I’m all about saving you money! (Except, I guess not since I just said you should buy 2 or 3 for the same amount… busted!)
Ok… I’m starting to ramble… I am sooo excited this wine finally has arrived!
"Pretty in pink, yet verging on red and packed full of character, the 2020 Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo lifts up from the glass with beguiling depths of crushed stone, wild strawberries, nectarine and zesty citrus. It’s vibrant, seeming to sizzle upon the senses with pent-up tension, as ripe red fruits ride a wave of stimulating acidity, leaving sweet inner florals in their wake. Enriching notes of spice, pomegranate and cherry pits linger through the long, slightly grippy and mouthwatering finale. Pour me another, please. This wine is made from a single vineyard with clay soils and a southern exposure, which was specifically tailored to grow Montepulciano for Cerasuolo. I thought it was interesting to hear from Cristiana Tiberio that she prefers to drink these wines young to properly enjoy the framing tannins that soften a bit too much over time. That said, you could easily cellar this for a number of years. PS: The vibrant color comes from all free-run juice. ” Vinous
