We sell an astounding amount of Sauvignon Blanc. The bright citrus minerally delights of New Zealand and Loire are easy to like, so refreshing, especially in the summer heat. But there is a whole wide world of wine out there, ya know? Here’s my new fave Sauv Blanc lookalike from Italy – Pecorino! Never heard of it? Well, until 20 years ago, nobody else had either, as it was thought to have gone extinct! But some researchers found a hidden patch in an overgrown vineyard and the resulting wine inspired people to bring the grape back from the dead! Yeah... this wine is THAT good...

From the Abruzzo hills outside of the seaside town of Pescara, just 23 miles from the sea and 1200 ft above sea level, Aziendo Agriola Tiberio is a rising star in Italian wine. Established in 2000 they’re already producing the best Pecorino in the world, this wine! It’s a family endeavor too, Riccardo Tiberio founded the winery, but handed over the reins to his son and daughter in 2008. Antonio handles most of the farming and vineyard management, and Cristiana is responsible for the winemaking. Cristiana learnt form the best too! She travelled across Europe gaining knowledge working with Jacques Selosse in Champagne, Nicolas Joly at Coulee de Serrant, and Egon Muller in the Mosel, before returning to her family’s estate. This Pecorino comes from a 3 hectare plot of 19 year old organically farmed vines planted in limestone soils. Yields are low, and the fruit is handled with care, only free-run juice is used, there is zero pressing for the skins. Slow natural fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, preserving the purity of the fruit, and the wine is aged for several months in the bottle prior to release. This beauty just beams with fresh fruit too! Lime zest, lemon, honeydew, white peach, and fig leaf aromas lift from the glass. Medium bodied and pure on the tongue, more citrus flavours, guava, granny smith apple, juicy but dry and bright with acidity. The finish is long and freshened with salty rocks that keep you coming back for more. Great now, and it’ll stand up to at least another 4-5 years of cellaring. Perfect with seafood, cheeses, and creamy pasta dishes.
“The 2020 Pecorino opens with crushed, mineral stones and dusty dried flowers. It gains in depth as notes of yellow apple, nectarine and fennel evolve in the glass. This is silky, soothing and ripe, contrasted by bright acids and salty minerals, with penetrating herbal-tinged stone fruits and an attractive inner smokiness. It tapers off incredibly long and savory. In fact, at times, the flavor profile reminds me more of food than wine, with a note of umami that resonates throughout. This is highly enjoyable today, but make sure to also lose a few in the cellar. The Pecorino benefitted from a longer growing season and later harvest, which packed a lot of extra character into this wine.' VM
