“Marco Marengo has produced a fine set of wines in the 2016 vintage. I highly recommend that you seek them out.” – Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
“Marco Marengo is one of Piedmont’s emerging superstar producers.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous
What a find this is! Undoubtedly one of the sleeper wines of the incredible 2016 vintage in Barolo. With most Barolo’s in the market now moving into the 2017 vintage I’ve been on the lookout for any hidden gems still around from 2016, and what a gem this is. Marco Marengo is one of the smallest producers La Morra and he’s still flying under the radar, for now… The Marengo family has been producing wine in Barolo since 1899 and has steadily added small parcels of some of La Morra’s greatest vineyards to their estate over the years, including the top-rated Brunate “Grand Cru” that is considered to be one of the greatest sites in all of Barolo. This 2016 “normale” is anything but normal. A blend of fruit from Marengo’s sites across in La Morra, including that superb Brunate fruit that forms the core of this wine.

“The M. Marengo 2016 Barolo opens to an almost exotic character with little hints of freshly cracked white pepper, pressed violets, powdered licorice root and touches of clove and cinnamon that are playfully sprinkled throughout as this wine changes and evolves in the glass. The curious thing about this wine is that I am reminded of Nebbiolo, but not only. Those distinctive white pepper notes recall Pelaverga or maybe Freisa (another red grape of the Langhe area that, according to some researchers, could be related to Nebbiolo). This wine puts on quite a beautiful showing, and those savory or spicy notes are cleverly downplayed to give more prominence to the beautifully pure and brilliant fruit on hand. This wine represents a blend of fruit from various sites in La Morra (Serradenari, Boiolo, Fossati and Roncaglie), and together they paint a very authentic portrait of this Barolo village known for delicate, floral and softly graceful expressions of Barolo. Some 16,300 bottles were made.” – WA
“So enticing with aromas of ripe strawberries, violets, lavender and raspberries that follow through to a full body and very chewy, powerful tannins. Firm and intense. Very spicy in the finish with beautiful fruit. Needs three to four years to soften. Try after 2023.” – JS
