93 pts Jeb Dunnuck The Gundlach-Bundschu family have been farming their Rhinefarm estate in Sonoma for over 160 years! That’s six generations of the family working together in the vineyards and winery, passing on a lot of knowledge through the years. Here’s their classic Claret “Mountain Cuvee” blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The fruit comes from the family’s Rhinefarm estate and their neighbor’s vineyards planted along the steep southwestern facing slopes of the Mayacamas Mountain range. It beams with black currants and red cherries, accented nicely by hints of spice and chocolate. It’s bright and beautifully balanced with smooth tannins and a lovely velvety texture that leads into a long fresh finish that brings you back for more. I love the winery’s suggested pairings “weeknights, mom’s spaghetti and meatballs, a picnic in a park on a foggy day, dinner with the in-laws…” Says it all really, a wine for every occasion! Jeb Dunnuck suggests this could age for up to 10 years, so load on up!
“Based on Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the ruby/purple-hued 2019 Mountain Cuvee gives up a juicy, lively style reminiscent of Bordeaux with its red and black currants, tobacco leaf, and cedar aromas and flavors. With beautiful fruit, medium-bodied richness, and silky tannins, it's an undeniably delicious red to enjoy over the coming decade or more.” – JD “A Bordeaux-inspired blend for everyday life that’s soft, lush and smooth but never sweet. Dangerously easy-drinking, this Merlot and Cabernet-based red wine offers balance, food-friendly structure and approachability. It’s crafted for everyday enjoyment in Sonoma Valley.” – Winery note.
