Yeah, I’m trumpeting the 89 pt review. I know everyone blinks if it is 90+, but let’s just move past that. 89 pts for a $15 Bordeaux? That’s a pretty stunning review. Consider the venerable Prieure Lichine from Margaux was only rated 87 pts in the same vintage. And that will set you back $60+!
“Yeah, Todd, but that’s Margaux.”
Well… when the wines are tasted, they aren’t rated differently because of their appellation. And really, there isn’t much difference between these vineyards and Margaux. Take a look at this picture…
Behind you are the vineyards of Cambon la Pelouse and Trois Moulins (same owners). Those trees you see? They’re about 500 yards away. Just past them are the vineyards of Ch. Giscours, a rightly famous Margaux producer. Man, what did we do before Google Maps blew up the notion that these appellations were unique and special? Oh, right… we paid lots of money for a name…
Anyhoo…
When all is said and done, this is just a fantastic Bordeaux from the Left Bank. The 33% Cabernet Sauvignon gives backbone and tannins to the rich blackberry and plum flavors. With the bottle age, everything has come together nicely – though this will still drink great for another 3-5 years.
"The 2015 Chateau Trois Moulins is another good value from the 2015 vintage. A blend of 52% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Cabernet Franc that was brought up in 30% new oak, it has a perfumed style in its menthol, eucalyptus, forest floor, and black cherry-driven aromas and flavors. These carry to a pretty, elegant, beautifully balanced effort that’s already drinking nicely yet should keep for 7-8 years." JD (3/19)
