I’ve been a bit long-winded of late, so I’ll keep this simple. I’m drawn to this wine for two reasons.
First, this is quintessential modern California Chardonnay, full of ripe citrus and tropical fruit, balanced by vibrant acidity and just the right kiss of oak. It’s full and rich, yet remarkably balanced and, dare I say, quaffable? It compares with other California Chards at $40 and up. For the tariff, this is an incredible buy for a delicious wine. And, in this style, you will discover how friendly Chardonnay is with food. The winery suggests fresh spring rolls, and who am I to argue? http://www.cambriawines.com/blog/fresh-spring-rolls-with-dipping-sauce
And, as my beautiful red-headed daughter is almost 4,000 miles away, crushing it in her second year at University College London, I admit I am compelled by the story of this winery. Founded by Barbara Banke 30 years ago, the winery is run by her two daughters, Katie and Julia Jackson, original winemaker and now general manager Denise Shurtleff, and current winemaker Jill Delariva Russell. And their commitment to female empowerment runs deeper than their management – each year, Cambria provides $100,000 in grants to remarkable women leaders. As the proud father of a remarkably strong young woman, I will happily admit this resonates with me.
“The 2019 Chardonnay Katherine's Vineyard is fabulous. Rich and ample, the Katherine's offers striking dimension to play off its mid-weight structure. Lemon confit, tangerine oil, spice and tropical accents all meld together effortlessly. The Katherine's is a blend of various parcels and clones across the estate. This classic Santa Maria Chardonnay hits all the right notes." Vinous
