Serilhan St. Estephe 2019
92-94 pts Vinous / 92 pts Decanter / 91-93 pts Wine Advocate / 92-93 pts James Suckling
Both Lisa Perrotti (WA) and Neil Martin (Vinous) ranked it in their “Top 5 Wines of St Estephe Primeur 2019”
My only comment is dump this one in a decanter for as long as you can/want. It will reward some air, but it is ridiculously approachable as a pop-and-pour.
The critical reviews are ridiculously effusive. My enthusiasm cannot hold a candle. So let’s give way to theirs…
“With a deep garnet-purple color, the 2019 Serilhan bursts from the glass with notes of ripe blackcurrants, boysenberries, black raspberries and cedar chest plus nuances of red roses, pencil lead and camphor. The medium-bodied palate shimmers with energy, featuring tons of crunchy black fruit and a finely grained texture, lifted by fantastic tension, finishing long and perfumed. Impressive!” WA
“The 2019 Sérilhan is a total knock out. A rush of grilled herb, inky dark fruit, licorice and menthol notes hit the palate as the 2019 makes a strong opening statement. Deep and virile in feel, the 2019 has so much to offer. It is without question one of the sleepers of the vintage. In a word: impressive.” Vinous (Antonio Galloni)
“The 2019 Sérilhan, attired in a very chic blue label now, conveys real quality on the nose with well defined blackberry, cedar and sous-bois aromas that seem very pure and nuanced. The palate is ripe and succulent on the entry, yet there are genuinely very fine tannins here, lending this Saint-Estèphe a silky texture à la 2016 and a persistent, gratifying finish. Bon vin!” Vinous (Neal Martin)
Guillaume Gonnet Cotes du Rhone Villages "Le Hardi" 2019
Guillaume refers to this as a "Baby Chateauneuf du Pape"... I've often wondered, and asked, what the fruit source is here. Fifty year-old vines on a south-facing plateau... doesn't sound like Cotes du Rhone... Perhaps he is telling us? Hmmm...
In any case, this is just impressive. Fifty year-old vines provide plenty of intensity and complexity. No need for oak here, so none is used. The fruit is just ridiculous... I had to keep checking the bottle to make sure I hadn't opened their Chateauneuf by mistake. (The only downside to the strikingly beautiful, but way too similar labels). 80% Grenache, 20% Syrah. It's that 20% Syrah that gives this wine a smoky note, along with some backbone. No wonder the wine is call "le Hardi" - "The Bold"! Dark blackberry and cherry aromas give way to a powerful wine with loads of savory garrigue notes. This baby offers a powerful array of ripe, briary fruit combined with garrigue – but the wine is impeccably balanced and caresses your palate on the long finish. In essence – a perfect Rhone red for matching with just about any dish you can throw at it!
Poulleau Bourgogne Rouge 2019
“Gorgeous!!!” That was my entire tasting note for this gem. And three stars, which means buy as much as I can get. Unfortunately, it wasn’t much… so I’m trying to extend the supply in this mixed offer!
50+ year-old vines, on average, primarily in Volnay, along with a little in Meursault and
Savigny-lès-Beaune. Yeah… 50+ year-old Volnay vines… from the heralded 2019 vintage. Sign me up!
Like all Poulleau wines, this baby explodes from the glass with juicy cherry and raspberry aromas giving way to flavors of the same. Hints of violets and tea add depth and complexity. True to its Volnay origins, this wine is an elegant expression of Pinot Noir, with heady aromas and soft tannins. The Bourgogne AOC website describes Volnay as standing out from other wines of the Beaune “like the lipstick imprint of a kiss…”
I don’t know what that means exactly, but I sure like the sound of it!
The winery suggests pairing with stew, roasted veal, or meat pies. Hmm… chicken pot pie… no… straight up meat pie… trust me… it's delicious and satisfying. Click on the pic for a recipe.
