Aia Vecchia - Toscana Lagone 2020
I’ve been a fan of this wine ever since I visited Aia Vecchia in Bolgheri a few years ago. Tasting at Aia Vecchia on the heels of appointments with some top producers in Montalcino and Chianti I was instantly struck by how approachable and frankly affordable these Bogheri’s are. I mean Bolgheri is after all home to some of the most expensive and sought after wines in all of Tuscany, Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Le Macchiole - this is the seriously high rent district! The Pellegrini family (owners of Aia Vecchia) sold grapes to those big guns of Bolgheri for decades. Then in 1995 they replanted many of their vineyards with the help of renowned agronomist David Schuster, and imported new plants direct from Bordeaux. Then they teamed up with Tibor Gal, former winemaker and pioneer at Ornellaia, and in 1998 they released their first Bordeaux inspired blend – Lagone! Aia Vecchia still consider this to be their flagship wine today, and while the rest of Bogheri’s wines seem to climb in price year after year Lagone still remains as a spectacular value.
A blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc from sustainably farmed vines planted 20+ years ago. Aged for 12 months in barrique, then six months in bottle prior to release, its ready to roll. And this beauty bounds from the glass! Wild cherry, dark plum, coffee bean, vanilla, smoked meats and hints of herbs… How much is this again? A juicy palate follows that’s just packed with ripe red fruits and hints of spice. There’s great structure, supple tannins, and a smooth long finish that brings you back for more. Pasta, pizza, cold cuts and cheeses… Heck, just grab a glass and pour me one too! You can expect this luscious little Tuscan red to age gracefully for another 8+ years too. Crazy good value, grab a case before its gone.

"The 2020 Lagone is a very pleasant Maremma red. Succulent cherry/plum fruit, spice, dried herbs, leather, menthol and rose petals are front and center. Medium in body and quite open, the 2020 is a charmer. Drink it over the next few years." - Antonio Galloni
