I think this is easily one of the coolest wines coming out of the Cotes d Rhone. Generally speaking, Grenache is the king of the Southern Rhone. It thrives in the Mediterranean climate and loves the large galet stones that dominate the soil. However, this comes from a cooler pocket in the Southern Rhone, Signargues, that is known for its Syrah. This is over 90% Syrah- a massive contrast from the rest of its peers in the south!
This wine always reminds me of a Crozes-Hermitage – aromas of blackberry, anise and just a hint of bacon. Heady aromas of spice and earth give way to a seemingly endless array of flavors – licorice, spice, vanilla, smoke, black pepper. This wine likes to meet you where you’re at- if you’re looking for something to pop and pour at the end of the long day the simple, accessible fruit is ready to go. But there are some grippy tannins here, so don’t be afraid to make something with some weight behind it for that perfect pairing!
