This year we’ve travelled far and wide, quite literally, to find the best wines for our biggest deal of the year. Rich travelled to Portugal and Danielle to the Pacific northwest in search of the best wines and deals for you. Months and months of researching, tasting hundreds of wines in the $20+ range to pare down to just four standouts. When we zeroed in on something, we negotiated with the supplier for an even better price. Four wines… 100 cases of each wine… that gets their attention!
All the wheeling and dealing gets the price down to just $191.88 for the case (3 of each wine) … That’s $15.99 per bottle…already beating most US Best prices. This is only sold as the case- three bottles of each!
Altesino Toscana Rosso 2024 (Tuscany, Italy)
92 pts James Suckling
Normally $26.99
“An attractive nose of minerals, ripe red and blue fruit and touches of violets, black olives and stones. The palate is smooth and juicy, with a medium body and lively fruit in the middle. Balanced and focused." JS
Altesino is one of Tuscany’s most iconic estates. The winery is located in Montalcino’s eastern hills, with vineyards surrounding the magnificent Palazzo Altesi, built in the 14h century. Present day owner Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini “the Queen of Brunello” has revitalized this historic estate since purchasing it in 2002. She added two talented winemakers to her team, Simone Giunti and Alessandro Ciacci, and Altesino continues to produce some of Montalcino’s most sought after wines today. Rosso di Altesino is their Super Tuscan blend, a ‘Super Montalcino’ if you will. A blend of 80% Sangiovese Grosso (the Brunello clone) grown significantly in their Castelnuovo dell'Abate vineyards (the golden zone for Brunello production), with 20% Cabernet and Merlot from Pianezzine. Think of this as baby Brunello meets sophisticated Bordeaux. All the fruit is hand-harvested, with the grapes fermented in stainless steel, then aged six to eight months before bottling. There’s so much classic Tuscan appeal here with vibrant ripe berry aromas and a touch of wild herb. A supple exquisitely balanced palate follows, there’s great structure, gorgeous forest fruits and fresh galestro soil minerality on the finish. Perfect for pasta dishes, roasted chicken (or turkey of course), richer pork and barbequed dishes too. A superb table wine for the holiday season.
Chevalier Delaude Languedoc Rouge 2022 (Rhone Valley, France)
95 pts Decanter
Normally $19.99
"Elegant and expressive on the nose. The palate is juicy and smooth, with fine texture, subtle richness, and vibrant minerality. Flavors of redcurrant and crunchy strawberry are lifted by floral notes. Tannins are precise and well-structured." Decanter
Prepare to be wowed by this impressive southern French Grenache blend! We were instantly impressed and knew we had to include this one in our Case of the Year. The Delaude family’s rich history in viticulture goes back for many generations in the Corbières region of southwestern France. Owner winemaker Thomas Delaude grew up in the vineyards, picking grapes with his grandfather and crawling in and out of barrels at the winery. Chevalier Delaude combines fruit from Thomas’ estate vineyards in both Corbières and Minervois; Grenache, Syrah, and old vine Mourvedre grown in clay-limestone and sandstone soils. Thomas’ meticulous attention to detail is evident in the quality of this exceptional cuvee. All the grapes are harvested at night, away from the oppressive heat of the late summer days in southwestern France, preserving freshness. The fruit is then double sorted by hand, with only the best berries making the cut for this cuvee. Delaude uses long macerations on the skins, extracting color and concentration, and ferments the three grape varieties separately in stainless tanks, preserving their natural character. He crafts this cuvee from his favorite tanks and ages it for 12+ months before bottling. Classic aromas of ripe red cherry and raspberry climb from the glass, with subtle hints of spice, herbs, and earthy minerals adding nuance. A richly concentrated palate follows, blackberry and plum fruits combine with dark chocolate and pepper. Ultra-smooth in texture, with abundant dark red fruits notes and fine velvety tannins leading into a long finish. There’s luxurious appeal here, it’s a wine that tastes like it should cost five times the price. Irresistible now and you can expect this wine to age well too, for at least another five years. Great with lamb, ribs, brisket, and roasted root vegetables drizzled with balsamic.
Herdade do Esporao Bio Series Colheita Tinto 2024 (Alentejo, Portugal)
90 pts Wine Advocate & Wine Enthusiast for the previous vintage
Normally $25.99
"The red 2023 Colheita Tinto, sold as Espoão Red in the US, was produced with a multi-grape blend of Trincadeira, Touriga Franca, Aragonês, Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet and Tinta Miúda, fermented in concrete and stainless steel with a soft extraction and aged in these containers to preserve the character and origin of the wine. It has a mixture of ripe berry fruit, aromatic herbs, flowers and spices and a medium- to full-bodied palate with abundant tannins that call for food. It comes in at 14% alcohol." WA
Tasted at the winery, I was floored by this wine. Herdade do Esporao is one of Portugal’s jewels. The estate is located in the heart of Alentejo in southeastern Portugal, and is home to cork oak forests, olive groves, neolithic archaeological sites, biological preserves, and a Michelin starred restaurant with its own organic kitchen gardens. The original boundaries at Esporao were established in 1267, but its modern history started in 1973 when Jose Roquette acquired the property. The Roquette family are passionate about sustainability and biodiversity and it shows in everything they do. Esporao is so much at one with nature that it feels more like you at a nature preserve than a winery! Biodiversity is at Esporao’s core, when I visited in May I could hear the constant hum of bees and pollinators in the vineyards.
This Bio Series Tinto represents those core principles, a wine that showcases what nature provides within a vintage (Colheita). The blend changes a little every year, this is not wine to a formula, this is a true representation of the harvest. The 2024 release is a certified organic blend of Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez (Tempranillo), Syrah, Petit Sirah and “others”. Stainless steel and concrete tanks for fermentation and ageing, preserving all the vibrant fruit flavors. Wild red fruit aromas entice, with hints of plum, blueberry and savory minerals. A silky palate follows with more wild berries, fine tannins, good structure and fresh acidity lending brightness to the finish. Pour this at your next party, your friends and family will be wowed. Great with grilled meats and cheese plates. A versatile wine that’s delicious now and will cellar well too.
DeLille Cellars Metier Red Blend 2022 (Columbia Valley, Washington)
90 pts Vinous Media
90 pts James Suckling
90 pts Wine Spectator
Normally $24.99
"A cascade of violets and lavender gives way to wet stone and crushed blackberries as the 2022 Red Blend opens in the glass. This is juicy in character, with a balance of tart wild berry fruits and perfumed inner florals. Hints of spiced orange and clove linger on as the 2022 finishes with staining length and gentle tannins. The value here is fantastic. This is a blend of 55% Syrah, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Malbec." VM
DeLille Cellars is one of the pillars of Washington State’s blossoming wine industry. Founded by four friends in 1992 with a focus on single vineyard cuvees from Columbia Valley’s Red Mountain AVA, Delille is recognized today as one of America’s top producers. So much so that Robert Parker dubbed them as “the Lafite Rothschild of Washington State”! DeLille’s consistent critical acclaim is quite staggering, numerous Top 100 list placements, and five Wine & Spirits Top 100 Wineries of the World accolades. DeLille’s top wines regularly retail for $90-$160+ a bottle! A red blend of this kind of caliber from a top estate at sub $20 is what we call a “no-brainer”. These Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon type blends seem to have become the signature of the Columbia Valley over the years and DeLille takes it to the next level with this impressive Metier bottling. A blend of 55% Syrah, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Malbec, 8-10 days on the skins followed by fermentation in tank then ageing in French oak barrels (8% new). Bold aromas of blueberries and black cherries with cocoa nibs, coffee, and smoky spices on the nose. Rich dark fruit flavors follow, there’s remarkable depth, great structure and a long spice laced finish. A cold winter night type red, kick back and enjoy to warm the soul. You can expect this gem to age gracefully for another five years or more.
