Bordeaux Wine of the Year!
We sell a ridiculous amount of Bordeaux each year. Dealing with the largest Bordeaux importer in the world results in incredible prices that allow us to compete on price with anyone. Which spurs even more sales. Which gets us access to more wines. And even better pricing. Which… well, you get the idea.
We also get to taste, and drink, a stunning array of Bordeaux.
When we tasted this one back in the summer, we knew we had to go big on it. This is the largest single Bordeaux purchase I’ve made. Money, meet mouth… er, rather my email “mouth”…
If you buy one Bordeaux... heck, one red wine this holiday season, this is it…
“It’s a hidden gem.” Jeb Dunnuck
“worth hunting down.” Neal Martin, Vinous
“This is lovely, a Lalande to look out for.” Jane Anson
“Glorious... I imagine myself to be in Pomerol... an exceptional wine... Highly recommended... shockingly good.” Colin Hay

A number of factors combine to make this our Bordeaux of the Year!
Factor 1 - Let’s start with Pomerol, home to some of the most famous, and expensive, wines in the world – Petrus and Le Pin. They’ll set you back over $4,000 per bottle. The, ahem, “lesser” wines like Lafleur, Conseillante and Clinet will only cost you $300-$1,200! Petrus and Le Pin, are located in the northeastern section of the appellation, on what is known as the Pomerol Plateau. The confluence of soil and microclimate is what make this area and its wines so special.
“But, Todd… this wine is from Lalande-de-Pomerol.”
Yes… and no… and here’s why you should care. Canon Chaigneau is located in Neac. Historically a separate region, Neac chose to merge with Lalande-de-Pomerol instead of Pomerol in the 1930s. Since the rise of Petrus et al, they have surely been kicking themselves.
The truth is, Neac really does belong in Pomerol. Canon Chaigneau lies a mere 1.5 miles from Petrus. Even more than proximity, Neac is a continuation of the Pomerol Plateau, with the exact same soil and microclimate. The exact same.
Factor 2 – Winemaker Thierry Garnaud was formerly in charge of a little place called Cheval Blanc from 1988-2018. He made a few 100 pt wines… 1990, '98, 2000, '03, '05, '06, '08, '10, '15 & 2016!
Enough said!
Factor 3 – New owners, Romik Arconian and Marine Fontana, took over the property in 2020, securing Garnaud in a hands on role and bringing new investments.
Factor 4 – 2020 is considered to be one of the finest vintages EVER for Pomerol and its surrounding vineyards. Warm and dry weather resulted in lush, rich wines!
Factor 5 – A drinking window through 2038? For this price? Get outta town!
All righty then… what have we got?
From younger vines on the estate. 90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet & 5% Pressac. (More commonly known as Malbec, outside of Bordeaux). Vinified and matured entirely in concrete tanks. The result is a pure expression of Right Bank Bordeaux. Silky smooth and elegant, without any oak to hide behind. Dark blackberry fruit is balanced by fine tannins. Nothing is overdone or over extracted – this is suave and extremely drinkable.
Food pairing? Hmm… this baby loves birds of all sorts – duck, pheasant, turkey, chicken, quail, particularly when accompanied by some mushrooms and fresh herbs. Stews are also on my shortlist… be it beef, lamb or hearty vegetables. Chicken pot pie? Oh my… that sounds good. Just look at that crust... and you really do anything you want with it. Chicken and mushrooms... heck, just mushrooms and veggies... hmmm....

“The 2020 Cuve 8a Beton has more lift and certainly more complexity on the nose compared to the regular bottling. Slightly more tertiary in style, savory perhaps. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, black olive and tinged black fruit that define its saline finish. This is an excellent Lalande-de-Pomerol that is worth hunting down. Drink 2024-2038.”
