Carmignano is an ancient growing region located in northern Tuscany not far from Pisa. Archaeological digs in the area have found Etruscan artifacts relating to wine production dating back over 3000 years. Tenuta di Capezzana itself was founded in 804 AD, no I’m not missing a digit, this is a seriously old winery!
In the early 1800’s growers in Carmignano started to cultivate Cabernet Sauvignon alongside their native Sangiovese vines, producing the first “Super Tuscan” styled wines long before the craze caught on in Bolgheri and Maremma in the mid 20th century. But Carmignano is tiny, the entire region is planted with just 270 acres of vines, so most of these wines are consumed locally. And with rosato as delicious as this its no wonder the Tuscans are keeping it all for themselves!
Rosato di Carmignano is actually a very old style of wine that originated in medieval times when sharecroppers would siphon or “ruspare” a portion of the landowners grape must for themselves. This juice would only be lightly colored and in its early stages of fermentation. The farmers would finish fermentation and enjoy a lighter styled “for the people” type wine if you will! Capezzana’s Vin Ruspo Rosato is a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from 20 year old organically farmed vines. The first thing that strikes you about this wine is the color, a dark cherry red with orange hues. This is obviously not a Provencal style rose, far from it actually, this rosato has more Tavel-like appeal. Strawberry, red cherry, blood orange zest, fine spices and white pepper set this wine alive. A fruit abundant palate follows that’s packed with more luscious red fruits. It’s round, textural and silky on the tongue, with sneaky building complexity that again gives you that Tavel-like essence. It’s allure is seamless, with an almost minute long finish that’s bright with limestone minerals and crisp citrus acidity. Stunning now and I know this will age gracefully for at least another year. It’s the perfect food wine too. Try with grilled fish dishes, salumi and cheeses, vegetable risotto, and tuna tartare. But I’m thinking Thanksgiving, this would be perfect with turkey, ham and all the trimmings!

"Dusty rose and crushed stone give way to freshly sliced green apples as the 2022 Rosato di Carmignano opens in the glass. This soothes with its round textures and crisp orchard fruits as yellow citrus nuances add contrast toward the close. The 2022 leaves a crunchy sensation through the finish, tapering off with tension. A lemon rind concentration puckers the cheeks." - Eric Guido
