This is the second label from the Dillon family, owners of Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut-Brion and Quintus. It was started by Prince Robert of Luxembourg to honor his great-grandfather Clarence Dillon, founder of the family dynasty. Seriously, I can’t make this up…
The bottom line is these people know how to make great wine… and it’s not like they need the money… so why not make a series of ridiculously underprice wines for the quality? Why not indeed!
Roughly 48% Semillon, 42% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Muscadelle. The high proportion of Semillon gives this wine an uncommon level of body and texture. A little barrel aging adds to the mouthfeel without adding oaky aromas or flavors. Intense and complex nose of exotic white fruits and citrus fruit mixed with floral notes of linden and acacia. The palate is rich, generous, ample and intensely fruity, with very good tension. The Sauvignon Blanc citrus notes juice delicately coats the exotic sweetness (lychee, mango) of the well-ripe Semillon. The Muscadelle adds a delicate floral note to the aromas and elegance to the overall wine.
What to pair with? Well, oysters for sure are found everywhere in Bordeaux right now, and who could object to a glass of this to wash them down?
But let’s also see what is on the menu at l’Atelier 115, a charming little spot just down the road from Chateau Haut Brion… Fried snails w mushrooms in hazelnut oil, raw prawns w green beans and black sesame, Confit salmon w butternut squash and clementines… hmmm….
