Prepare to be wowed by this impressive southern French Grenache blend! We were instantly impressed and knew we had to include this one in our Case of the Year. The Delaude family’s rich history in viticulture goes back for many generations in the Corbières region of southwestern France. Owner winemaker Thomas Delaude grew up in the vineyards, picking grapes with his grandfather and crawling in and out of barrels at the winery. Chevalier Delaude combines fruit from Thomas’ estate vineyards in both Corbières and Minervois; Grenache, Syrah, and old vine Mourvedre grown in clay-limestone and sandstone soils. Thomas’ meticulous attention to detail is evident in the quality of this exceptional cuvee. All the grapes are harvested at night, away from the oppressive heat of the late summer days in southwestern France, preserving freshness. The fruit is then double sorted by hand, with only the best berries making the cut for this cuvee. Delaude uses long macerations on the skins, extracting color and concentration, and ferments the three grape varieties separately in stainless tanks, preserving their natural character. He crafts this cuvee from his favorite tanks and ages it for 12+ months before bottling. Classic aromas of ripe red cherry and raspberry climb from the glass, with subtle hints of spice, herbs, and earthy minerals adding nuance. A richly concentrated palate follows, blackberry and plum fruits combine with dark chocolate and pepper. Ultra-smooth in texture, with abundant dark red fruits notes and fine velvety tannins leading into a long finish. There’s luxurious appeal here, it’s a wine that tastes like it should cost five times the price. Irresistible now and you can expect this wine to age well too, for at least another five years. Great with lamb, ribs, brisket, and roasted root vegetables drizzled with balsamic.
Decanter: 95 Points
"Elegant and expressive on the nose. The palate is juicy and smooth, with fine texture, subtle richness, and vibrant minerality. Flavors of redcurrant and crunchy strawberry are lifted by floral notes. Tannins are precise and well-structured."
