While wines from the Etna appellation are all the somm geek rage, wines from the surrounding areas of Sicily can languish in distributor’s warehouses. We made a take-it-all deal to absolutely slay the best US Price!
Technically, this wine is made within the Etna appellation. But there is a pinch of Viognier to lift the aromatics that make it ineligible for the designation. So compare with the increasingly popular Etna Bianco wines that sell for $30+. Less than half the price for equal or better quality!
Exceptional at featuring the signature Mt. Etna volcanic minerality in their wines, Cottanera gives the terroir-forward experience at every level. By resting on lees for three months, the bodacious Catarratto concentration and length is put on full display. With stainless steel aging, the floral and white fruit flavors remain clean and pristine. Perfectly balanced acidity means a fresh, long finish while maintaining a firm texture. This pure expression and saline backdrop call for sushi, or even simpler, go for an nice nigiri. An easy and elegant dinner combo to treat yourself mid-week.
“The Barbazzale Bianco is composed of predominantly Catarratto, the most typical, and widely planted, white grape variety in Sicily. As is characteristic of Catarratto wines, Barbazzale Bianco exhibits a pleasant freshness with delicate floral perfumes of wisteria and Scotch broom on a saline backdrop. Barbazzale is the name of the “contrada,” or wine district, in which the grapes are planted in the volcanic soil of Mt. Etna, lending a remarkable minerality to the wine.” importer
James Suckling: 91 Points
"Pretty nose with ripe pear, melon and a hint of chalk. Medium-bodied with a silky feel and plenty of minerally acidity pushing the clean fruit forward. Clean, flavorful finish. Catarratto with a dash of viognier. Drink now."
