The estate lies in the idyllic Horse Heaven Hills appellation, on the same land their family has farmed since 1886. The Dead Ranch Cabernet is a blend of 90% Cabernet, 8% Syrah and 2% Merlot. All the fruit is grown in their sustainably farmed vineyards. Horse Heaven Hills is a haven for top Cabernet too, the vines enjoy long, hot summer days and cool nights, perfect for producing a ripe balanced fruit crop. This is beautiful Cabernet, really classic. With aromas of ripe blackberries and cassis, warm spices, and just a hint of earth. Rich and dark in the glass, and solid and concentrated on the tongue. The structure and depth is really impressive, belying its $15 price point. As Rich commented, having opened a bottle yesterday, “Wow… that is a big old boy…”
More dark berries coat the palate, with some plum adding some juiciness. Medium bodied and smooth with fine round tannins, great mouthfeel and a long velvety finish that seems to last for minutes. Food pairings? Err, burger please! Labor Day is, after all, right around the corner. But you could pair with a more complex meal too, a stuffed leg of lamb or beef short ribs would be great. As good as this wine is now, I bet it will age for at least another 5+ years or more.
