We don’t drink enough wine from Washington State. I’ve been saying that for years, and have always struggled to figure out why not. Finally, I think I might have a clue. Up till now, when “we”, collectively, discuss Washington wines, they are kind of all lumped together into one grouping. Yet, when we discuss the great Cabs of California, we refer to Napa and Sonoma, then break it down even further into Oakville, St. Helena, Rutherford, etc. Heck, we even get into specific vineyards. Yet, “Washington” refers to the entire state.
Which is, of course, ridiculous! A Cabernet from Napa doesn’t taste like one from Paso Robles… and the same holds true in Washington for Columbia Valley, Walla Walla, Yakima, etc.
So… how do I break this cycle?
Here’s what I am going to do… I’m going to start small. Real small. The Red Mountain AVA is Washington’s smallest. With roughly 710 acres of vines, it is 1.5% the size of Napa Valley. Like Napa, this is Cabernet country, and the prestigious wines from the region consistently rate the highest in the state. Check that… they rank as some of the highest-rated in the country!
Like Napa, Red Mountain Cabs are lush, rich, intense and loaded with tannins. But, let’s break it down further… Red Mountain Cabs are more akin to the mountain cabs of Napa – Spring Mountain and Howell Mountain specifically – with their firm, tight tannins, and higher than average acidity.
Ok… so if Red Mountain is similar to these areas, why bother learning about it?

Compare 2013, 93-95 pt Cabernets from those regions of Napa… Keenan Reserve at $100+, Juslyn at $150, O’Shaughnessy at $90, Robert Craig at $90, Pine Ridge at $140 and on and on and on…

Each vineyard adds its unique pedigree to this complex blend. Grand Ciel brings elegance and purity of fruit while Upchurch demonstrates rich, savory, and mouthwatering character. Ciel du Cheval contributes structure, black fruits and minerality balanced by the commanding, ripe flavors from Klipsun. – winery note
Wine Advocate: 95 Points
"Coming from four vineyards—Upchurch, Grand Ciel, Klipsun and Ciel du Cheval—the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Four Flags begins with an oaky nose that is precise, focused and fresh. Aromas of black and dark red fruit tones sway with a delightfully dusty mineral essence and soft red florals. Full-bodied, fresh, firm and juicy, the palate offers a fine mineral tension and succulent acidity, while a polished frame of fruit cascades across the mid-palate before ending with a succulent, food-friendly finish and lingering tannic edge. Just under 19,000 bottles were produced after the wine aged for 20 months in all French oak, 82% first fill. Bravo!"
Jeb Dunnuck: 92-94 Points
"The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Four Flags is classic Red Mountain Cabernet and has ample red and black fruits, notes of new leather, graphite, loamy earth, and dried herbs, medium to full body, and building yet ripe tannins."
