From vines with an average age of 55 years! 70% Syrah / 30% Grenache. The Syrah comes from a high-elevation area called Lesquerde – a gentleman by the name of Michel Chapoutier also sources fruit from this region. (But not at this price!) The cooler climate brings a note of smoke and white pepper to the black raspberry fruit of the Grenache. Like all Lafage wines, this strikes an amazing balance between ripeness of fruit and brightness - between terroir and concentration of fruit.
Food pairing? Meat is the obvious choice here, be it lamb, beef, pork… grilled, braised, pan-seared… freshly ground black pepper as a finishing touch is beautiful. But this is versatile, and inexpensive enough, to serve up with pizza or burgers… even a simple pasta with meat sauce. That’s a household staple… some Italian sausage taken out of its casing, cooked then mixed with sauce. Easy and delicious!
Wine Advocate: 91 Points
The 2019 Côtes du Roussillon Bastide Miraflors is a blend of 70% Syrah (vinified as whole bunches and aged in 20% new demi-muids) and 30% Grenache (destemmed and aged in concrete). Hints of peppery spice, vanilla and woodsmoke accent the blueberry-scented nose, while the full-bodied palate is ripe, supple and concentrated, adding hints of black cherries, chocolate and licorice on the long finish.
