"Glou glou" is a French onomatopoeia for "glug glug. It's taken on a second meaning in the wine world for something that you'd pour a comically oversized glass of and quaff with abandon. It's light and easy and generally a little lower alcohol, but most importantly it's outrageously fun!
A project from the one and only Jean-Marc Lafage, La Retro is a throwback to the joyous wines of his youth in the Roussillon. Mostly Grenache with a smattering of Carignan and a touch of Lladoner, it's fresh and fruit driven with loads of up front cherry and strawberry that culminates in a zippy finish.
I'm a big fan of Tamlyn Currin's initial assestment- "Cheeky, cheeky, cheeky! Ping-pongs around the mouth, paintballing cherry wine gums and raspberry fruit chews and Parma-violet candy in all directions. (Don’t get me wrong, though – the wine is dry, not sweet; just so packed with such cheerful fruit that it’s like being flash-mobbed by singing strawberries!) The tannins are not even an afterthought. They were abandoned in the press along with all pretensions and all thoughts of tomorrow. I love it!"
Chill this down and bring it to the cookout, or just keep it in the fridge for a perfect after work refreshment. You'll be grateful it's a liter bottle...
