Domaine Polleau was created in 1950 by Michel Polleau and is now run by his son and daughter-in-law, Thierry and Florence. It is a small domain of just 7.3 hectares. They own small parcels in seven different appellations, all in the Cotes de Beaune. Their Volnay and Aloxe Corton offerings have become huge favorites of ours. But this is the wine I have truly been craving. The price/quality ratio is out of this world! Which figures since most of the grapes are from Volnay. Only 1,000 cases are made each year, so I typically have only been able to get 2 or 3 cases.
I find Poulleau’s wines compelling for how velvety in texture they are. The wine is loaded with cherry and raspberry fruit but balanced by tea and earthy notes. 50+ year-old vines result in a concentrated, complex array of flavors.
Full stop. 50+ year-old vines? Mostly declassified Volnay? With some Meursault and Savigny-les-Beaune? For $24.99
