Domaine St. Damien - Gigondas Souteyrades 2023
Price: $52.99
St. Damien’s vineyards in La Baumette, a “hot” corner of Gigondas, not only have terrific exposure allowing for maximum ripeness, but also the same famed galets roulees like neighboring Chateauneuf du Pape. A marriage of rich fruit and traditional winemaking, no punching down and no new oak, aged in cement tanks for 6-8 weeks after fermentation, and then transferred to large, used oak foudres for 12 months before bottling unfined and unfiltered. What that does is allow the wine to breath, unlike stainless steel, and soften, without adding toasty, oaky flavors. From vines at least 40 years old, with some 70-100+ years, this is concentrated, potent juice, with layers of dark and spicy fruits, and a broad, savory mouthfeel shockingly lacking in tannin. The finish is impressive for its length and complexity. And yet all the power comes from perfectly farmed and ripe fruit, not a hint of new oak!
Jeb Dunnuck: 93-95 Points
"The 2023 Gigondas Les Souteyrades is based on 80% Grenache and the rest Mourvèdre. It has a ripe, concentrated, medium to full-bodied style as well as beautiful aromatics of red fruits, peppery garrigue, and spicy, Provençal nuances. It's balanced and has the vintage's fresher, focused, elegant style, good concentration, and integrated tannins."

"The 2023 Gigondas Les Souteyrades Vieilles Vignes opens with fresh violets, ripe raspberry, dried herbs and minty subtleties. Pencil shavings add more aromatic complexity. Full-bodied, concentrated and harmonious, the 2023 is a delicious Les Souteyrades, wrapping up with remarkable persistence and outstanding length. Although it needs two more years in a cool cellar, it’s still going to be approachable ahead of the 2022, which needs more time to come around."
