“Diego Magaña is already one of the hottest names in the new generation of young Spanish winemakers, and as great as his wines are, he’s only just getting started.” – Importer
“flat out great… brilliant reds… truly outstanding, among the best produced in the appellation.” - Luis Guitierrez (Wine Advocate)
If the Magaña name sounds familiar that’s because we’ve been selling the Viña Magaña wines for years. Perhaps you remember the story of Diego’s father Juan smuggling clippings from Petrus across the Pyrenees during the Franco era to establish his iconic Navarra estate? It’s safe to say the Magaña family has wine running through their veins. Diego began making wine with his father in the mid-2000s, but in 2014 he chose to beat a different path. Inspired by his good friend Raul Perez he started making small quantities of Bierzo wines under his Dominio de Anza label, produced in very small quantities in the corner of Raul’s winery.
Fast forward ten years and it’s safe to say that Diego learned a lot under Raul’s tutelage. Maybe too much as his own bottlings now rival Raul’s!
A field blend of mostly Mencia, with small amounts of Bastardo (Trousseau) and Garnacha Tintorera mixed in. Meticulously hand-harvested from old vine parcels in Bierzo’s Los Rosales, El Val, and renowned El Rapolao zones (of Raul Perez fame). Fermentation is spontaneous in wooden tinas (large oak vats) and the finished wine is then aged for a year in used French oak barrels before bottling. If all of this sounds a lot like Mr Raul Perez’s Ultreia wines the you’re on the right track. There’s that same deft touch, impeccable balance and pure fruit that you find in Raul’s top cuvees. The wine gleams with red fruits, there’s vibrancy from fresh minerals, racy acidity, just enough depth from fine tannins, and a silky long finish. Really reminiscent to me of Raul’s Ultreia Rapolao bottlings that sell for twice this price!

"The 2022 Dominio de Anza Selecci¢n de Parcelas comes from the same plots as the 2021 with small variations, and it fermented mostly destemmed because he feared the concentration from the year. Although it's only 12.9% alcohol, the wine has ripe aromas of berries, even some raisins, and the palate is more generous, a little rounder and softer but keeping good tension. It seems to be aging at a faster pace. However, three hours later, the wine was a lot fresher, the sensations of very ripeness had disappeared. It's a ripe year, yes, but there is no excess, and the wine felt a lot more balanced, even less evolved and younger than the sensations I found earlier on. Decant a couple of hours in advance? 14,700 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2024, after 12 months in used oak vats and foudres."

"The 2022 Dominio de Anza is Mencía and others from Bierzo, sourced from vineyards planted over 80 years ago. Intensely purple in hue, it offers aromas of pomegranate, violets and red fruits like cherry and sour cherry accented with menthol and hints of animal notes from aging. The palate is smooth, with tension, medium weight and reactive tannins. It's from a warm vintage with good fruit depth, highlighting mint for added complexity. The 2022 is rich and layered."
