The appellation of Auxey-Duresses is one of Burgundy’s least understood and appreciated. Located west of Meursault, Auxey’s vineyards offer a dizzying array of expositions covering every point of the compass. Vines planted to Pinot Noir are nearly double that of Chardonnay. Figuring out which grows best in any given vineyard is an arduous task ongoing for generations.
But a map sure helps. Taking a peek, you can see that the Auxey vineyard of Les Vireux is adjacent to the Meursault vineyard of Les Vireuils. We’ve seen this time and again, haven’t we now? Where all that separates two vineyards is a road. Heck, there isn’t even a road separating these two vineyards, just a path barely wide enough for a small tractor to navigate.
2019 Les Vireuils Meursault? $90 average online. And that is not including an offering from Mr. Meursault himself, Jean-Marc Roulot, which sells for over $400!
