Anna Espelt has made her life in Emporda, a relatively small wine region, just on butting up against the border with France in Catalonia. It’s a fascinating part of the world, with Anna herself finding evidence of human habitation dating back to the bronze age. The Phoenicians brought grapevines to the region in the 5th Century BC, but in modernity it’s taken on a reputation as a home for Boutique craft wineries pushing the envelope on Spanish Wine.
Anna herself is one of the driving forces behind the revitalization of Empadora, farming her organic vineyards amidst the millennia-old standing stones that litter the rustic landscape. Her understanding of not only the terroir but the entire biosphere around her is what has allowed for such ethereal wines, coursing with livelihood and a true sense of place.
This is Anna’s blend of Garnacha Blanca and Roig (Grenache Gris), grown overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. With this proximity comes a remarkable flavor palette, showing an incredible variety of fruit and fresh herbs on the nose. Just 25 meters above the sparkling blue sea, the distinct maritime influence is present in the hints of sea spray that energizes the wine, melding with tree fruit and white flower tones to create a wine that harnesses the unique beauty of the region.
A vibrant style of Garnacha Blanca, in distinct contrast with the inland styles that we’re accustomed to, the Mediterranean Breeze keeps the berries small with thicker skins, boosting the acidity and phenolics for a white wine. Anna compounds this with native yeast fermentation and the judicious use of French oak, imparting structure and boosting the incredible aromatics even further.
This wine shines with anything remotely Mediterranean- think Falafel, Dolmas, or anything with a Pita. It’s great for casual dinners that go long, or cool nights on the porch where you can picture the sea stretching out before you. Grab a bottle, but make sure you don’t forget her equally enchanting red.
