Tasted at the winery, I was floored by this wine. Herdade do Esporao is one of Portugal’s jewels. The estate is located in the heart of Alentejo in southeastern Portugal, and is home to cork oak forests, olive groves, neolithic archaeological sites, biological preserves, and a Michelin starred restaurant with its own organic kitchen gardens. The original boundaries at Esporao were established in 1267, but its modern history started in 1973 when Jose Roquette acquired the property. The Roquette family are passionate about sustainability and biodiversity and it shows in everything they do. Esporao is so much at one with nature that it feels more like you at a nature preserve than a winery! Biodiversity is at Esporao’s core, when I visited in May I could hear the constant hum of bees and pollinators in the vineyards.
This Bio Series Tinto represents those core principles, a wine that showcases what nature provides within a vintage (Colheita). The blend changes a little every year, this is not wine to a formula, this is a true representation of the harvest. The 2024 release is a certified organic blend of Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez (Tempranillo), Syrah, Petit Sirah and “others”. Stainless steel and concrete tanks for fermentation and ageing, preserving all the vibrant fruit flavors. Wild red fruit aromas entice, with hints of plum, blueberry and savory minerals. A silky palate follows with more wild berries, fine tannins, good structure and fresh acidity lending brightness to the finish. Pour this at your next party, your friends and family will be wowed. Great with grilled meats and cheese plates. A versatile wine that’s delicious now and will cellar well too.
Wine Advocate
"The red 2023 Colheita Tinto, sold as Espoão Red in the US, was produced with a multi-grape blend of Trincadeira, Touriga Franca, Aragonês, Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet and Tinta Miúda, fermented in concrete and stainless steel with a soft extraction and aged in these containers to preserve the character and origin of the wine. It has a mixture of ripe berry fruit, aromatic herbs, flowers and spices and a medium- to full-bodied palate with abundant tannins that call for food. It comes in at 14% alcohol." - 90 pts for 2023
