This is more old-school Nebbiolo than it is rose. The Vajra family produces Claré J.C from younger Nebbiolo vines in the style in which wines were made centuries ago. “Claré JC is our take on the forgotten days of Nebbiolo, when it was vinified and enjoyed in its lighter and fresher garment. The winemaking protocol follows the 1606 writings of G.B. Croce.” Yeah, really old-school!
100% organically farmed Nebbiolo, all natural fermentation with 20% whole cluster and only a short maceration before ageing in tank, preserving the all the exquisite fresh fruit flavors and aromatics. Vajra’s description is perfect: "Bright pigeon-blood ruby red color. The Claré JC shows gorgeous notes of cherry candies, red mountain fruits, fresh mint oil and a whiffle of picked thyme. On the palate, it reveals a lovely creaminess with crunchy, sweet berries and a very fresh finish."
What really sets this wine apart is its drinkability and versatility. On a 90 degree day (and we still have plenty of those) you can drink it straight out of the fridge and its quenches your thirst with ease, spilling fresh red berries across your tongue with energy. Or try it just below cellar temperature (50ish degrees) and you find added depth and intrigue, delicate tannins, sneaky complexity, brilliant mouthfeel. Like your reds a room temp? It shines there too, with rose petals galore, crunchy berries, and wild herbs combining in a silky seamless fashion. It pairs with just about everything at the dinner table and is ready to drink pretty much as soon as you pull the cork. I ask you, does vino da tavola get any better than this?
Jeb Dunnuck: 90 Points
"The bright transparent ruby 2024 Langhe Nebbiolo Clare J.C. is a preview of what is to come. The nose is fresh and inviting with poppy red fruit, floral perfume, and wet stones, while the palate is snappy and refreshing, medium-bodied, and lovely, with ripe notes of white pepper and spice, likely accentuated by the addition of whole clusters in fermentation and a light carbonic maceration that add a lively verve and zest to the wine. Drink over the near term and serve with a light chill."
