100% Monastrell from the Yecla region of Spain. Planted in 1970, these 50 year-old vines are tended organically. That’s no easy feat in Yecla, where scant rainfall and challenging soils make for exceptionally low yields. A particularly vigorous vine here might produce 5 pounds of grapes- just enough to make 2 bottles of wine. Winemaking here is nothing short of a labor of love- emphasis on the labor!
But it pays off, and then some! The wine explodes from the glass with notes of red cherries, blackberries and a hint of Chinese Five Spice. Flavors of the same combine with blueberries in a rich, expansive wine. At the price, you won’t feel bad popping a cork with simpler foods – burgers, wings, ribs, pulled pork. But for the quality, don’t hesitate to pair with fancier stuff – lamb chops off the grill with a side of minted peas would be superb!
