Greywacke (pronounced “grey-wacky) was founded in 2009 by Kevin Judd, the founding winemaker at the legendary Cloudy Bay. With 25 years at the helm, Kevin did as much, or more, than anyone to elevate New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc to the status it holds today. And yet, with Greywacke, his aim is to interpret the famous Marlborough style – ripe, textural and scrumptious – “with the volume turned well down.”
Now, this certainly doesn’t imply the wine is subtle. After all, it is Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand! It’s just that in dialing back the extremes, the wine is able to reveal more nuanced and complex notes. Passionfruit and guava, pear and peach, along with hints of elderflowers and citrus. A portion of the wine undergoes fermentation in old oak barrels, Adding a creamy textural mouthfeel to the wine.
In short, you may have drunk a lot of Sauvignon Blanc, but you’ve not drunk many, if any, better than this!
“This stunning white is aromatic, fresh and intense, with notes of lemon curd, yuzu, peach, ripe melon and honeysuckle that are effortless and mouthwatering, backed by lemongrass and candied ginger notes on the long, expressive finish.“ WS on 94 pt 2021

"This white’s vibrant, aromatic mix of lemon blossoms, ripe peach, kumquat and lime sherbet shows focus and intensity on a sleek and smooth body. Touches of candied ginger and green tea linger on the fresh finish. Drink now."

"The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc was hand delivered to me in Fremantle by winemaker Richelle Tyney from Greywacke, all the way from Marlborough, New Zealand—roughly 5,200 kilometers between us. The wine leads with passion fruit and white pineapple, green apple, beeswax and brine. The wine is salty, fine and sedate—the characters are all in balance with each other. I love this wine from this small producer. It is intense and concentrated, shaped by savory phenolics and loaded with crunchy New Zealand acidity. This speaks of the place in a clear, unfettered voice, and it's brilliant for that. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink: 2025-2030." - Erin Larkin

"The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc is open and richly fruited with mid-palate richness. It offers tropical flavors and elderflower notes with flecks of green pepper and jalapeño. Despite the ripeness of fruit, there's still plenty of acidity and an assured grip on the finish. Drink: 2025-2030." - Rebecca Gibb, MW
