The mountainous, alpine geography of Savoie makes for surprising growing conditions which the reclusive vignerons of the region have creatively maneuvered. This wine is from the Abymes appellation of Savoie, which is south of the city of Chambéry, situated in a flat valley with soaring slopes surrounding it. While cool continental climate dominates, there’s of course alpine influence, but also Mediterranean, creating a truly unique microclimate.
The Abymes appellation is quite a vision, seeing practically every viable southern/southeastern facing slope planted to vine. You don’t have to look far, as the whole area of Abymes is practically a speck in the 2000 ha Savoie region. Not much sprawl for vineyards, but they do have the height for it, with high-elevation, rugged terrain soaring to 1804 ft! And those slopes are mostly covered with Jacquere vines.
Jacquere accounts for 50% of all vineyard area in Savoie, and 70% of the region’s focus is white wine, so it’s more than likely that if the bottle says Savoie, you’re drinking Jacquere. It makes for a dry, low-alcohol wine with such energetic acidity – it’s mouthwatering. The classic style here is crisp and pure, and the 6th generation winemaker of Jean Perrier et Fils, Gilbert Perrier, holds to this tried-and-true style indicative of the alpine region. But he’s made some changes to the 170-year-old domaine…
Now grown to sixty hectares of vineyard, Gilbert has transitioned the domaine to organic and sustainable viticulture. He uses stainless steel for fermentation and aging, which makes his wines even more expressive. You’ll find classic aromas of pear, lemon peel, and white flowers, but also, herbal and spice nuance – maybe a bit of ginger. Can’t forget the flinty finish, too, due to the limestone scree soil. It’s so fresh and easy-going, at only 11.5% Abv, a half-case only makes sense when hosting for the holidays or just a back-yard bonfire.
