Les Narvaux is one of the most famous of the named vineyards in Meursault. The vineyard sits just upslope from the Premier Crus of Les Genevieres and Poruzots. The position on the slope means a thinner soil and more erosion that, 50 or so years ago would have been a downside in hard to ripen vintages. But farmers have figured out how to address these issues with cover crops and the establishment of older vines. And the rest of the world helped out with global warming, so the higher elevation is now a blessing. Sharing the same preferred exposure of Genevieres and Poruzots, Narvaux produces 1er Cru level wines – and often gets the same prices!
One of the distinguishing features of Narvaux is a vein of almost pure limestone that runs through the vineyard. Emonin’s parcel, planted a whopping 50 years ago, is smack on this vein. The result is a wine that tastes a whole lot like 1er Cru Puligny-Montrachet. 100% barrel fermented with 25% new oak. Aromas of ripe peach, nectarine and yellow plum dance on top of a palate of rich, buttery brioche. This baby is rich, full and luscious, yet maintains a wonderful tension thanks to the limestone soil and the vintage. It is immediately palate coating with a refined structure that carries the flavors across the entire mouth. The long finish has a slight lemon acidity, a fullness of hazelnut, and a river stone mineral edge.
