Again and again, I am drawn to the white wines of Argentina to satisfy my desire for something new, yet slightly familiar. It is the passion project of sisters Sofía & Lucila Pescarmona, who run this 125 year-old winery. As they explain, the project (literally, “Sisters’ Project”) represents their desire to share a new venture with each other. “It's an opportunity to miss each other less, to laugh at our differences and join forces with nature.”
They start with the Queen of wines, Chardonnay (50%), fermented in a combination of barrels and stainless steel tanks. Chardonnay provides the canvas on which the sisters’ painting is developed – a core of apple and pears with just the slightest hint of spice. Their father pioneered the planting of Viognier in the region, so it is only fitting that 22% of the wine is constituted thereof. Aromas of honeysuckle and peach add an exotic edge to the Chardonnay. Though just 18% Sauvignon Blanc, the variety’s tell-tale passion fruit and citrus aromas scream from the glass. To round it all out, 10% Semillion provides a honeyed edge and texture. The guiding thread throughout this wine is altitude. From some of Argentina’s highest vineyards, all of the grapes possess vibrant acidity, which stand in contrast to the unctuous mouthfeel.
Put it all together… and… deliciousness results!
Rich, fatty fish like salmon, tuna, sablefish, striped bass, mackerel and anchovies are the superstar pairing options here. Slightly spicy curries are also going to work well.
“The 2022 White Blend Proyecto Hermanas is 50% Chardonnay, 22% Viognier, 18% Sauvignon Blanc, and 10% Sémillon from the Uco Valley and Luján de Cuyo. It was aged for up to a year in 500L French barrels. Yellow in hue. The vivid aromas range from honey and herbs to peach and hazelnut, all against a subtle oaky background. A tart, taut palate complements the indulgent, almost creamy mouthfeel, producing intense flavors that linger into the finish.”
