By now you certainly know how much I enjoy finding the hidden gems of Burgundy. Most frequently, I find them in formerly marginal vineyards, now ideal due to global warming. Or across the road from more famous vineyards, the result of a somewhat arbitrary appellation system. This is NOT one of either.
Nope, this is straight-up 1er Cru from the heart of Mercurey. In fact, Marcilly has been regarded as one of the top 1er sites in the region, being one of the original five recognized in 1943.
So, what the heck is going on?
Turns out this walled vineyard had fallen into neglect in the early 2000s. By 2011, there were no grapes being grown. Luckily for us, Paris restauranteur Patrice de Jeu had a friend who knew someone and… he was able to purchase the entire vineyard! A decade later, after extensive replanting, the estate is turning out incredible wines. In the past three vintages, a whopping 27 bottlings have been rated 92-97 pts by James Suckling.
Unfortunately, those releases all came during the pandemic. Aside from simply being unable to market the wines, many critics were unable to visit and discover their wines.
Which means… VALUE!!!! For now…
