Matanzas Creek has quickly become our benchmark for great Californian Sauvignon Blanc. Last year we sold through over 100 cases of this wine in just a couple of weeks, and that was during a pandemic with our doors closed! Yep, you were really thirsty and this wine is delivered just what we all needed. At the sub $15 mark this has become the gold standard in US Sauvignon Blanc. And with supplies from New Zealand dwindling and French wine prices rising its fast becoming one of the greatest Sauvignon Blanc values in the world!
This 2019 is just gorgeous too, with even more vibrancy and zest than before. Enticing aromas of pink grapefruit, white peach, magnolia blossom, mariposa lily, and passion fruit capture the essence of a classic sunny and temperate vintage in Sonoma. So fresh and almost juicy on the tongue, medium-bodied and packed flavor. Honeydew melon, peach, apricot, ripe pear, lime zest, jasmine… Wow, how much is this again? I love how fruity and abundantly tropical this wine is yet it still remains dry. It’s so beautifully balanced with great acidity and zippy minerals leading into a long lip-smacking finish that keeps you coming back for more.
“The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma County contains 4% Sémillon and opens with loads of stone fruits: white and yellow peaches, apricot and quince, with wet stone, gooseberry, cut grass, lime pith and an underlying spicy layer. The palate is light to medium-bodied, gregarious and energetic—full of flavor and with tangy acidity to lift the long, mineral-driven finish. I love the bright personality of this wine!” – WA on the 2018.
Matanzas Creek Description
93 points Tasting Panel
"Impressively intricate but still harmonious, this is a fine example of the trend toward increasing complexity in California Sauvignon Blanc. The use of multiple clones (plus a 3% dash of Sémillon) and a variety of vessels for fermentation and aging results in an interesting mix of aromas and flavors of pear, melon, and citrus, with hints of dried herbs and wildflowers.
Jeb Dunnuck: 91 Points
"The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma County is a pale silver/green hue and includes the small addition of 3% Semillon, with 13% of the wine fermented in old French oak. It shows off lifted aromas of white grapefruit zest, piney fresh herbs, white currants, and saline. Midweight and refined, it floats on the palate and has a delicate floral touch, with fresh acidity, although it’s not austere."
Wine Spectator: 90 Points
"Exuberant and refreshing, featuring juicy Fuji apple, peach and ripe melon flavors that complement the core of lemon and pomelo notes. Touches of fresh grated ginger and vetiver linger with green tea notes on the finish. Drink now. 38,223 cases made."
