Let me tell you a story… once upon a time, there was a super-delicious little wine from Calatayud. Garnacha from 50+ year-old vines from a 50+ year-old cooperative of farmers. The wine garnered massive ratings and everyone bought it, and drank it, by the case load. The “brand” got hugely popular, so the enterprising importer, whose label it was, sold it! As production expanded with the new, grocery-focused importer, quality went down, price went up, and we moved on. But, then I sat down with a gentleman from Spain and tasted through his portfolio. Some really good stuff… and then this one… whoa… not really good… great! And déjà vu… I felt like it was 2004 all over again. The first time I tried that blockbuster Garnacha from some other player… how much for this? Are you serious?
Produced by a 63 year-old cooperative of small farmers, this gem is made not from 50+ year-old vines… no, this baby comes form 70-100 year-old vines! Hand-harvested, destemmed, then aged six months in used oak barrels. Oh my… the aromas… memory overload… sooo seductive and sexy, oozing cherry liquer, cherry pie, cherries fresh from the tree… Garnacha’s characteristic black pepper spice and smooth tannins will have you slurping this down faster than you probably should have. But, heck, it’s the weekend, right? Well, tomorrow anyway…
I don’t care what you serve this with, it is going to be awesome! At the price, just fire up the grill and drop a couple of bottles on ice. I call it “family grill” because we all go to the grocery and each person picks out what they want. It’s my job to time everything so it all hits the table at once. The only rule is it has to be able to cook on the grill. We’ll get chicken, pork, steak… mussels, fish, scallops… portobellos, peppers, onions… and on and on…
