Once the darling of the wine world, Muscadet has fallen on hard times. Like so many regions before and since, Muscadet chased the almighty dollar, or the French Franc, I suppose. Romantic images of platters of fruits de mer served alongside a bottle of Muscadet were replaced with thoughts of… well, cheap, commercial plonk found on the bottom shelf of the supermarket.
At its peak, Muscadet vineyards covered over 13,000 hectares. Now, that has dwindled to less than 7,500. As the nearby city of Nantes has expanded, many retiring vignerons have cashed in and sold off their properties and cellars to developers.
And yet, quality in the region has never been better, thanks to the dedicated remaining producers. Attention to lower yields, specificity of site selection and harvest timing have all led to more distinctive, and delicious, wines.
Yet the reputation remains… which means… we’re hopping on board the train from Paris to Value Town!
From the Ollivier Freres estate, grapes are sourced from 45 year-old vines and chosen from different plots to achieve balance: one for the crisp minerality and acidity that is Muscadet’s signature, another that always delivers ripe grapes. The result is an incredibly friendly wine. Friendly with both your palate and with food! As the name implies, this is a perfect match with oysters and all manner of seafood.
