The Santa Rita Hills appellation is located in the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley in Southern California. The valley is “transverse” with an east-west orientation that funnels cool ocean air and evening fog. The result is a growing season average temperature identical to that of Willamette Valley in Oregon. And yet, at 34 degrees north, the region is closer to the equator than any in Europe and any significant one in the US. The intense sunlight combines with the cooling fog and breezes to create a long growing season where grapes can achieve extreme levels of ripeness. Perfect for grapes like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay but sneaky good for Rhone grapes like Syrah and Grenache as well!
