"Poggerino is fabulous. Proprietors Piero and Benedetta Lanza make wines of real distinction from their small estate in Radda. The Poggerino wines stand out for their remarkable purity and nuance." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Fattoria Poggerino is a small family owned estate located in the heart of Tuscany’s Chianti Classico zone. Their 12 hectares (29 acres) of organically farmed estate vineyards are planted at 1200-1500 ft above sea level. At this elevation the vines feel the benefit of diurnal (day/night) temperature fluctuations. The warm (often very hot) daytime temps at the height of the summer are measured by cooler nights and soft breezes, the grape skins thicken and the acidity remains bright. The rocky robust soils of their south-southwest facing vineyards (comprised of mostly local “galestro” rocks) provide great drainage for the roots. Oenologist Piero Lanza has focused on new clonal selections with his more recent plantings too. Sangiovese from Poggerino’s vineyards is noted for smaller grapes and tighter clusters, resulting in higher skin to juice ratio, and more concentrated flavours. All these factors combine superbly, Poggerino is producing world class Chiantis. This 2018 is stunning.
This Bugialla Riserva is glorious. 100% Sangiovese from densely planted vines, the oldest of which date back as far as 1973. Careful berry by berry selection takes place in the vineyard and then again at the winery, with only the top fruit selected for the riserva. Vinification and maceration takes place very slowly, over 55 days, in large concrete tanks with manual punch downs and pump overs, extracting the colour and tannins from the cap. By December the wine is ready to be racked off, its placed into large Slavonian oak casks for 18 months before bottling. Another year of bottle ageing prior to release means that once this beauty hits the US market its ready to groove! I love the balance of this wine. Yes is a big Tuscan red, with plenty of structure, lots of concentration and fairly hefty tannins. But there’s a striking purity here too. The fruit is bright, not masked by heavy oak notes. Cherry and red plum upfront, with notes of leather, pipe tobacco, and wild herbs for intrigue. Graceful and elegant across the palate, supple and smooth in spite of its intensity of flavour. Juicy, almost sweet fruit tones, more sour cherry and plum, with some fresh blueberries adding to the mix. There’s just enough grip from the fine but persistent tannins, and a long harmonious finish that last for minutes. Irresistible now and you expect this beauty to age gracefully for another 10 years. What a wine!.

“The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla is a bold, dramatic wine. Ample and generous in feel, the 2018 wraps around the palate with serious density that continues to build through to the finish. Black cherry, mocha, lavender, licorice and spice fill out the layers. This is an especially rich, heady style for Radda, and it works so well.” - V
