Sabine Godme - Grand Cru Millesime Champagne 2016
From one of our favorite under-the-radar producers, Sabine Godme, this gem is 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir from the villages of Verzenay, Beaumont-sur-Vesle and Verzy. The dosage is 5 g/l, on the low side for Brut, but just enough to give it more roundness than Extra Brut. The base wine is fermented in barrel, followed by a minimum of three years aging on the lees. A bright nose of apples and chalky minerality leads into a medium-bodied Champagne, rich with lees aging and hints of toasted brioche. The palate is crisp and fresh with a long finish.
“Grand Cru” indicates the vineyard sources are the highest-rated possible. 100 out of 100. Yahoo! So we’re talking the best of the best grapes. Consider the winery’s “lesser” non-vintage bottling rated 95 pts Wine Enthusiast… and 2016 is considered an outstanding vintage, rated 94 pts by Wine Advocate… ladies and gentlemen, the evidence points to an extraordinary deal!
Of course, the best way to ascertain and confirm this wine’s outstanding quality is to buy one!
