When Gruner first started getting noticed, there was a concerted effort from specific regions to export their wines – Wachau, Kamptal and Kremstal. These small regions account for a small fraction of total production, but are generally considered to produce the “best” wines. So high quality, small production, and increasing demand - that means these wines have started to climb in price.
The solution for us is finding more supply from a region that doesn’t have as much demand. Enter Weinviertel. Adjacent to these famed regions, Weinviertel is a large region, producing roughly half of the country’s Gruner Veltliner and more than double the Big Three combined. As you might expect of such a large region, the soils and microclimates vary greatly, along with the quality. Most is produced in the lower lying, flat, fertile and dry plains to the east and north of Vienna.
Setzer is located in the town of Hohenwarth (“high observation point”) mere miles from the Kamptal region (think Gobelsburg, Hiedler, Hirsch and Brundlmayer ). You have todraw a line somewhere, and Hohenwarth missed out. Why? The vineyards here are higher than in Kamptal. Sitting at 400 meters above sea level, there was a time when… well, you know the drill. Enter climate change and voila! The new Sweet Spot!
