Juan Antonio Blanco, Gorka Etxebarria and Roberto Monforte met while studying oenology in Logrono, Rioja. Like many young winemakers, they lamented the loss of historical vineyards. Larger wineries saw unproductive vines in prime regions and smelled opportunity. Buy up the small vineyards, rip out the old vines, create one larger vineyard that can be productive and turn out the juice!
The three friends saw a loss of their heritage. But what could they do as broke college kids? Lucky for them, and for us, their heritage included some teeny parcels of vineyards owned by their families. Even their families wanted to sell the vineyards! But the three convinced their relatives to allow them to farm the land.
It’s not a way to get rich. We’re talking 78 cases from this vineyard… 40 from another… they still have to keep their day jobs! But with outstanding reviews, they are making a name for themselves. They’ve started working with other families to help farm their vineyards and produce more wine. A new generation is rising in Rioja, and it will be exciting to watch… er, drink!
The 40+ year-old Los Tollos is labelled a “Viñedo Singular” or unique vineyard (we might say single vineyard). It is a fairly new designation for Rioja wines. Vineyards must be at least 35 years old, with yields restricted far below the general appellation.
Now, here’s the real kicker – all wines labeled Viñedo Singular must pass an official blind tasting. Twice! Some producers believe that Viñedo Singular wines will help to preserve old vines; others say that they might raise the profile of unsung growers. All I know is I am excited!
Okay… the wine… I’ve gone on long enough… I’ll just cut to the critic’s reviews. Suffice to say, this is some good stuff! And it will pair wonderfully with whatever you are throwing on the grill this weekend!
96 pts Tim Atkins “ a superb cuvée of Tempranillo with 2% Mazuelo and Malvasía Riojan. Spicy, intense and peppery with wonderful focus, a sheen of new oak, violet perfume and layers of succulent dark berry and liquorice flavours. 2025-35.”

“Rhubarb and redcurrant aromas. Dark fruits and dark chocolate abound on the palate while darts of lemon refresh. Fine tannins, youthful with an exceptionally long finish.” Dec
