Saint Cosme’s Cotes-du-Rhone is different from most. Normally producers blend a mix of mostly Grenache with Syrah, Mourvedre and varying combinations of other Rhone varieties. At Saint Cosme their Cotes-du-Rhone is all Syrah! The fruit comes from two old vine plots. One on the Villafranchian terraces (Lirac), vines here have deep roots in mixed soils of limestone sand, red clay and pebbles, all bringing lots of minerality to the wine. The second source is from Vinsobres, a warmer site, bringing more ripe fruit and concentration to the blend. At the winery fruit is partially destemmed before being tank fermented using only native yeasts. This is a classic southern French Syrah, a lovely bright and pure expression of the grape. Violets, blackcurrants, blueberries, and hints of smoked meats and earthy minerals set the tone. Medium bodied and wonderfully balanced, with fleshy ripe fruit, fine tannins and a long finish with incredible finesse. Drink now, or age for another 5+ years or more. I’d pay $30+ for a Syrah of this quality and be very happy,
